Political hothead and Russian colonel Vladimir Zhirinovsky called for president Vladimir Putin to wipe out Turkish capital Istanbul, killing nine million people.

Turkey’s decision to down a SU-24 fighter jet after it entered their aerospace was branded “stupid” by Zhirinovsky.

A nuclear attack can destroy Istanbul very easily. Just one nuclear bomb in the Istanbul Strait will wash the city away,” he told Moscow Speaking Radio.
“It would be such a terrible flood, the water would rise to between 10m and 15m and the city would [flood].

“And then there are nine million lives.”

The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia leader also called Turkey “enemy number one”.

Zhirinovsky’s chilling words come as Turkish president Recep Erdogan warned Putin not to “play with fire”.

Fears are now growing the world is on the cusp on another world war.

Erdogan said he wanted to meet Putin to resolve the ongoing war of words.

But Putin wants an apology from Turkey before he will enter talks.

He said it was “impossible” for Turkey not to have known it was shooting at a Russian plane.

“It’s got an insignia, you can see that very clearly,” Putin added.

Iran is “closer than ever” to the bomb, and completing it would be “easier than putting in a contact lens,” a senior Iranian official was quoted saying on Thursday.

The claim by Hassan Karimpour, an adviser to Iran’s Quds Force commander Qassem Suleimani, was reported Thursday in Iranian media, and quoted on the BBC’s Persian language website and Israel’s Hebrew-language Channel 2 TV.

Finishing a nuclear bomb would be “easy to do, as soon as the spiritual ban on nuclear weapons were lifted,” Channel 2 quoted Karimpour as saying.

The Iranian regime has repeatedly vowed that it is not seeking a nuclear weapon, and spiritual leader Ali Khamenei has issued fatwas forbidding nuclear weapons.

According to Fars news, Karimpour also said Iran has 14 missile depots, buried between 30 and 500 meters underground, equipped with automatic launchers, and that any country that dared to attack Iran would be riddled with large numbers of missiles fired from these depots.

Israel and others in the West believe Iran has been pursuing a rogue nuclear weapons program, however, and the US-led P5+1 world powers signed a deal with Iran in July intended to curb the program, in exchange for sanctions relief. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the deal as a “historic mistake” that would pave Iran’s path to the bomb, and challenged US President Barack Obama’s handling of the issue in a speech to Congress in March.

A former Iranian president reportedly admitted last month that the country’s nuclear program was started with the intent of building a nuclear weapon. The reported comments by Hashemi Rafsanjani to the state-run IRNA news agency marked the first time a top Iranian official — current or former — had said the country sought a nuclear weapon.

Earlier on Thursday, the head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog said he could not guarantee that everything Iran is doing is peaceful, even as Tehran takes steps to reduce its nuclear activities under the July deal. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano spoke Thursday to the IAEA’s 35-nation board.

Amano said he is “not in a position to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran,” and thus cannot conclude that “all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities.”

Most Americans have a reasonable chance of experiencing a destructive earthquake within the next 50 years, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has concluded.

The survey’s new National Seismic Hazard Map show that the risk of earthquakes in parts of the country — such as the Midwest, Oregon and the Rocky Mountains — is far higher than previously thought. All total, Americans in one-third of the country saw their risk for an earthquake increase.
“I worry that we will wake up one morning and see earthquake damage in our country that is as bad as that has occurred in some developing nations that have experienced large earthquakes,” Carl Hedde, a risk management expert at insurer Munich Reinsurance America, said of the map in The Wall Street Journal. “Beyond building collapse, a large amount of our infrastructure could be immediately damaged. Our roads, bridges and energy transmission systems can be severely impacted.”

Among the findings:
  • The earthquake danger in parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois and South Carolina is as high as that in Los Angeles.
  • 42 of the 50 states have a reasonable chance of experiencing a damaging earthquake in the next 50 years.
  • Parts of 16 states have the highest risk of a quake: Alaska, Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Kentucky and South Carolina
“We know the hazard has increased for small and moderate size earthquakes,” USGS scientist William Ellsworth told The Journal. “We don’t know as well how much the hazard has increased for large earthquakes. Our suspicion is it has but we are working on understanding this.”

Frightening Results From New Study

The USGS used new computer modeling technology and data collected from recent quakes such as the one that struck Washington, D.C. in 2011 to produce the new maps. The maps show that many Americans who thought they were safe from earthquakes are not.

Some of the survey’s other disturbing findings include:
    • The earthquake danger in Oklahoma, Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Virginia, New York and parts of New England is higher than previously thought.
    • Some major metropolitan areas, including Memphis, Salt Lake City, Seattle, St. Louis and Charleston, have a higher risk of earthquakes than previously thought. One of the nation’s most dangerous faults, the New Madrid fault, runs right through St. Louis and Missouri. It is the nation’s second most active fault. On Dec. 16, 1811, the New Madrid Fault was the site of the most powerful series of earthquakes in American history.

“Obviously the building codes throughout the central U.S. do not generally take earthquake risk or the risk of a large earthquake into account,” USGS Seismologist Elizabeth Cochran told The Journal. Her take: Earthquake damage in the central US could be far greater than in places like California, because structures in some locations are not built to withstand quakes.
Others agree.
“Earthquakes are quite rare in many places but when they happen they cause very intense damage because people have not prepared,” Mark Petersen, the project chief for the USGS’s National Seismic Hazard Map, told The Journal.
This new map should be a wakeup call for Americans.

UN: no clear-cut picture of whether Iran worked on nukes

VIENNA (AP) — The U.N. atomic energy agency is preparing to wrap up a more than a decade-long probe of alleged nuclear weapons work by Iran, but its report will stop short of delivering a judgment on whether the suspicions are valid, the agency’s chief said Thursday.

The report by the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency is meant to put the issue to rest after years of on-and-off attempts to investigate the allegations. The U.S. and its allies say Tehran conducted past research and development of such weapons. Iran says the accusations are based on false intelligence from its adversaries.

The issue has dominated IAEA meetings, contributed to U.N. Security Council resolutions against Iran and is now playing a role in determining whether sanctions against Tehran will be lifted under a nuclear deal that is expected to be implemented early next year.

But the comments by IAEA chief Yukiya Amano made clear that his assessment will contain enough gray zones to leave the question unresolved.

The report “won’t be black and white,” Amano told reporters outside a meeting of the IAEA’s 35-nation board. Suggesting some questions remain unanswered, he described his report as a “jigsaw puzzle” for which his agency has “pieces.”

While he said it was up to board members to decide whether to close the investigation on the basis of his report, diplomats briefed on the investigation said Thursday that outcome was likely.
Formally, the report will help determine whether Iran gets relief from sanctions in exchange for paring back its atomic activities under an overarching July 14 deal Tehran signed with six world powers.

Two diplomats said the U.S. and the five other powers that negotiated the July 14 nuclear deal with Iran were unlikely to be too critical, unwilling to risk jeopardizing that agreement. But expectations remain that Iran has continued either to deny the activities under investigation or insist they were part of peaceful nuclear research. They demanded anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the issue.

Iran is keeping up the pressure on the agency. Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned Wednesday that Amano and the board must “meet the stipulated commitments” — shorthand for closing the books on the allegations. Otherwise, he warned, Tehran will not hew to its obligations under the larger nuclear deal.

Amano said his report will be circulated among board members next week, with a special Dec. 15 meeting to be convened for a decision on whether to declare the investigation closed.

India Fires Another Nuclear Ready Missile

Amid increasing war hysteria, India on Thursday test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile, which has a strike range of 350 km.

The test was a part of a user trial by the Army and was carried out from a mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur at 1210 hrs.

“The trial data of the missile conducted by the Strategic Force Command (SFC) shows positive results,” said a defence source. The surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads and is thrust through liquid propulsion twine engines. It uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory to hit its target.

“The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the entire launch activities were carried out by the specially formed SFC and monitored by the scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of training exercise,” a defence scientist said.
“The missile trajectory was tracked by DRDO radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations located along the coast of Odisha,” the source said.

The downrange teams on board a ship deployed near the designated impact point in the Bay of Bengal monitored the terminal events and splashdown, they said.

Inducted into India’s armed forces in 2003, Prithvi II, the first missile to be developed by DRDO under India’s prestigious IGMDP (Integrated Guided Missile Development Program) is now a proven technology.

Such training launches clearly indicate India’s operational readiness to meet any eventuality and establishes the reliability of this deterrent component of the country’s strategic arsenal, they said.
The last user trial of Prithvi-II was successfully conducted on February 19, from the same test range in Odisha.

India to Get First Lot of Canadian Uranium Next Month

New Delhi: India will get its first consignment of Canadian uranium by next month, in a move that will help in securing fuel for nuclear power reactors in the country.

The first lot of 250 tonnes of Canadian uranium is already on its way and should land by the first week of December. Since it is imported fuel it will be used in the safeguarded reactors,” a senior government official said.

The deal, worth CAD 350 million with Canada’s largest uranium producing company Cameco Corp, will ensure 3,220 metric tonnes of uranium over the next five years.

Signed in April this year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the North American country, the development also assumes importance as Mr Modi during his visit had given emphasis on the nuclear energy aspect.

The Indo-Canada civil nuclear cooperation was signed in 2010. Incidentally, Canada had banned exports of uranium and nuclear hardware to India in the 1970s after New Delhi developed a nuclear bomb.

India has 21 operational nuclear reactors and six under construction. India this year registered a record production of 1,252 MT of uranium, manufacturing close to double the annual fuel requirement of atomic reactors in the country. The production has far exceeded the country’s annual fuel requirement of 650 MT for the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), which means the country has surplus nuclear fuel that will last several months.

Every 700 MW of reactor needs 125 MT of uranium every year. However, with the rising number of power reactors in the country, the demand is expected to rise. In the near future, two nuclear reactors of 700 MW each in Rajasthan Atomic Power Station and Kakrapar Atomic Power Station are coming up.

Apart from Canada, India currently procures uranium from Kazakhstan and Russia for its domestic reactors. Fuel for its two foreign reactors at Kudankulam is being taken care of by Russia. It also buys enriched uranium for its two Boiling Water Reactors at Tarapur from Russia. Plus, it is in process of procuring the nuke fuel from Australia.

Four atomic reactors of 700 MW each are also coming up at the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana. Fuel for Kudankulam plant in Tamil Nadu and Jaitapur in Maharashtra, coming up in collaboration with Russia and France respectively, will be made available by the foreign players.

Australia set for uranium exports to India, UAE

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Australian government has finalised two agreements to expand its global uranium exports with India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which are investing in nuclear programmes.

The Australia-India nuclear cooperation agreement would permit Australian companies to start commercial uranium exports to India, which Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop said was an important milestone in Australia’s relationship with the Asian country.

“This agreement provides the framework for substantial new trade in energy between Australia and India. The supply of Australian uranium will help India meet its rapidly growing electricity demand,” she added.

The administrative arrangements have been signed and uranium exports can begin immediately.
India is considered the second-fastest growing market for nuclear and is forecast to have about 100 GW of capacity in 2050, making it the third largest market for nuclear after China and the US. According to the World Nuclear Association (WNA), India has six nuclear reactors under construction (4 300 MW), 22 planned reactors (21 300 MW) and 35 proposed reactors (40 000 MW).
The federal government has also finalised Australia’s nuclear cooperation agreement with the UAE, paving the way for Australia to supply uranium for use in UAE’s developing nuclear power programme.

The UAE currently has no nuclear reactors operable, but is planning to expand its nuclear significantly. The WNA reports that the UAE has four reactors under construction (5 600 MW) and that it has proposed to build another 10 reactors (14 400 MW).

Bishop said that these agreements set out strict conditions for the peaceful use, safeguarding and security of Australian uranium.

The Australian resources sector has welcomed the signing of the agreements, with the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) saying that the uranium industry was looking forward to building relationships with customers and stakeholders in India and the UAE.

The MCA’s executive director for uranium, Daniel Zavattiero said that the agreements were timely, as they came just days after the release of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) latest World Energy Outlook 2015 detailing its projections on nuclear energy growth in India.

According to the IEA’s base case scenario, nuclear power generation in India is expected to grow by almost 700% from 2013 to 2040, while the UAE’s nuclear programme is targeting delivering electricity to the grid in 2017, and producing nearly a quarter of the country’s electricity by 2020.
Australia now has 24 nuclear cooperation agreements in force, allowing exports to 42 countries and Taiwan.

Australia has three operating uranium mines – Ranger, in the Northern Territory; Olympic Dam, in South Australia; and Beverley with Four Mile, in South Australia. Other mines were shut down pending higher uranium prices.

The country produced 5 001 t of uranium in 2014, which is about 9% of global output.
