India on Saturday test-fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, which is ‘capable’ of carrying a warhead of 300kg, from a test range along the Odisha coast, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

The cruise missile was test fired from a mobile launcher from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near Balasore in Odisha at about 11.33am, the news service quoted unnamed officials of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as saying. “It was an ‘excellent’ launch and a great success,” they said.

The PTI reported that the supersonic missile was capable of carrying a warhead of 300kg. “The two-stage missile, one being solid and the second one ramjet liquid propellant, has already been inducted into the army and navy, while the air force version is in final stage of trial,” the officials said. The Indian Army is already equipped with three regiments of Block III version of Brahmos missiles.

On Thursday, Foreign Office spokesman Nafees Zakaria said in Islamabad that India’s massive arms build-up and testing of inter-continental ballistic missiles was a source of concern for the region. However, Pakistan would not indulge in the arms race, he said. “Pakistan will maintain minimum deterrence capability to safeguard its national security,” he said.

“India’s massive arms buying spree, making it one of the top arms importers in the world, was driven by its desire for regional hegemony and global power status,” he said. On the other hand, Pakistan had been compelled to acquire and maintain a deterrent capability to ensure its national security, he said, adding that Pakistan never wanted to engage in any kind of arms race, nuclear or conventional.

Several international reports and independent observers had drawn attention to the rapid expansion in India’s capability to produce fissile material for military use, which had been made possible by the 2008 NSG waiver granted to India without appropriate non-proliferation safeguards and the subsequent nuclear deals struck with different countries.

In February, the Foreign Office urged the international community to check Indian conventional and nuclear arms build-up that had caused strategic anxiety in the region. “With conventional weapons balance already disturbed, India’s nuclear weapons build-up has dangerous proportions to tip the strategic balance and endanger peace of the region and beyond,” he said.

OPINION | Nuclearization of Indian Ocean: A Pakistan's Perspective

The emanating threat to peace of Indian Ocean is mainly due to the nuclearization initiated by Indians. Out of which, the chief elements or the challenges to peace in the ocean that could be counted among are listed as its militarization, increased missile capabilities, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and power projection by foreign militaries, in addition to piracy, illegal fishing, human, drugs and arms smuggling, maritime pollution and climate change.
The Indian Ocean, geo-strategically is present at the world’s most fundamental part. It is the third largest oceanic division of the world and commands strategically important sea lanes of communication (SLOCs) that link the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia with Europe, East Asia, and the US. Around 80 percent of the world’s energy trade passes through the choke points of this region.

Pakistan is concerned with the alarming modernization of India’s exasperated capabilities with regards to its missile and nuclear weapons. It would be pertinent to mention here that with the demonstration of the test launch of the K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) on March 31, 2016, India’s movement towards fielding an undersea deterrent is well taken. It was an indigenously built nuclear-powered submarine, the INS Arihant.

Due to the India’s ‘unrestrained behavior’, it became necessary for Pakistan to take a step forward towards a sea-based deterrent. Therefore, for this reason, Pakistan decided over an equivalent measure and successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable submarine-launched cruise missile, Babur-III on January 9, 2017, that is considered a compelled step.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz while speaking at an international forum in Pakistan said that this trend is likely to intensify in the coming years. And that “we are aware of our national interests and every effort will be made to strengthen our capacity to ensure that we remain ready to meet the emerging maritime security challenges. For us, to remain oblivious of the developments taking place in the Indian Ocean region is not an option.”
A statement issued by the Foreign Office states, “The reported Indian tests of a submarine-launched ballistic missile and development of a nuclear submarine fleet are serious developments, which impact the delicate strategic balance in the region. It has resulted in the nuclearization of the Indian Ocean.” India wants to exercise its supremacy in the whole region by its nuclearization of Indian Ocean. It will certainly exacerbate the already fragile strategic balance in South Asia.
There is another concern gaining hype nowadays regarding the un-demarcated borders in the Sir Creek. Pakistan has to be more careful about defending its borders, land or sea routes because if the communication link with the vessel is disrupted, it could prove to be extremely risky. Consequently, a good amount of naval pressure is necessary to keep our sea lanes open and safe. Nevertheless, the Sir Creek border issue has a potential to cast a shadow on the maritime security.

Projection of military and nuclear power into the seas will grip the region into an arms race and inevitably place it at the risk of a nuclear showdown. Mr. Aziz said that the Indian navy’s substantial expansion was a cause for concern for Pakistan and that Pakistan has a strategic stake in the peaceful navigation and security of the Indian Ocean region.

The Indian Ocean region is being taken with a sense of war whereas it is not all about war it has a potential of economic growth as well. It is a catalyst for peace and prosperity, cooperation, collaboration, connectivity, regional stability, and security. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah emphasized the substantial role being played by the Pakistan Navy in the sustenance of peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region that operationalisation of the CPEC and the Gwadar Port would lead to an exponential increase in maritime activities of the country’s coast. “Consequently, responsibilities of Pakistan Navy for maintaining a secure maritime environment will also increase manifold. The Recent establishment of the Task Force-88 is also a step forward in this regard.”

Ironically, India is heading day by day towards boosting massively its missile, conventional and unconventional capabilities. Pakistan has declared its intention of highlighting the dangerous implications of India’s plans to nuclearize the Indian Ocean at all relevant international fora through a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Last but not the least, India is playing a dangerous game in pursuit of achieving the status of a great power and regional hegemony. As a result, it is the collective responsibility of all the involving states to share the burden to maintain security in the region keeping and acknowledging it as a common goal.

New Delhi: The strong possibility that chemical weapons were used in Wednesday’s attacks in Afghanistan has brought the dangerous reality to India’s doorsteps. Pakistan’s growing arsenal of strategic and tactical nuclear weapons and the declared intent of terror outfits like Al Qaeda, Taliban and ISIS to acquire non-conventional weapons, including chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, has resonated very strongly in India and rapid steps are already underway to combat such attacks, be it from state or non-state actors.

“We have not faced nuclear or chemical attacks, but we will have to be prepared at every moment to deal with the issue,” defence minister Manohar Parrikar said on Thursd-ay. Alluding to reports of chemical attacks by the Taliban in Afghanistan on Wednesday, he said: “While these reports are yet to be confirmed, I have seen photographs of the local population suffering from blisters and burns and they are quite distressing.”

Significantly on Thursd-ay itself, the state-owned Defence Research and De-velopment Organisation (DRDO) handed over to the Army the NBC (nuc-lear, biological and chemical) Recce Vehicle which is all set to be deployed.

Resembling a battle tank and equipped with GPS navigation, meteorological sensors and radiation sensors, the NBC Recce Vehicle is capable of conducting effective reconnaissance of radiological and chemically contaminated areas, demarcation of contaminated zones, real-time communication of digital data after analysing the solid and liquid samples to the supported formation.

“The utility of the NBC Recce Vehicle goes beyond warfare and will prove to be indispensable in any NBC disaster situation too,” said a source who has worked on the development of the vehicle.

Going beyond, the DRDO has also introduced a bouquet of radio-protectors and radio-mitigator drugs that are required to reduce the effects of gamma irradiation substantially in the aftermath of a nuclear, chemical and biological attack.

In a nuclear disaster, a person is exposed to gam-ma radiations. In high dos-es, radiation syndromes can kill in hours to days to a few months, while in low doses, genetic and cancer disorders may result.

Radio-protectors and radio-mitigator drugs are required to reduce the effects of gamma irradiation substantially. The drugs have been put to Drug Controller General for special approvals, while provisioning to Indian armed forces has already started as these are life-saving drugs.

“The DRDO has also provided a NBC kit to the Indian defence forces although it has been segregated into elements for field use and in the hospital on the advice of the Army authorities,” said a top DRDO official on condition of anonymity.

Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) delivered this week’s GOP address to talk about the the threat of terrorism on American soil and his party’s dissatisfaction with the Obama administration’s handling of recent attacks.

Rubio was Tuesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”. Here are his words:

“Hello, I’m Marco Rubio. It’s my honor to represent Florida in the United States Senate.

In recent days, the evil face of radical Islamic terrorism has again appeared on American soil. We’ve seen attacks in Minnesota, New Jersey and New York.

Many innocent people were injured, and we continue to pray for their recovery. But fortunately, this time, the only loss of life was one knife-wielding terrorist, who was taken down by an off-duty police officer before more harm could be done.

These attacks remind us once again that evil is real, and that we remain a nation at war against radical Islamic terrorism.

This is a war against our country that has evolved, from terrorists with box cutters hijacking airplanes and flying them into buildings 15 years ago, to the threat of bombs targeting the Boston Marathon and charity 5K runs, speeding trucks being rammed into large crowds, makeshift bombs built with instructions obtained online, and knives and guns being used to massacre people in places like Orlando, Fort Hood, Chattanooga and San Bernardino.

Americans should not accept this as the new normal. We should not have to constantly look over our shoulder every time we visit a public place with our children, or take a walk down the street.

But we must also understand that this war will not end soon, and we can’t become fatigued or complacent about that reality.

This is a war we must win.

And winning this war requires American resolve – the kind shown by so many of our men and women in uniform over the past 15 years.

It requires the best intelligence community, equipped with the best intelligence-gathering tools – so that we can hunt down terrorists before they attack us, and bring swift justice to those who aren’t stopped in time.

It requires American ingenuity – to keep up with the modes of communication and coordination being used by these terrorists.

It requires American patriotism – like the kind shown by countless Muslims who have refused to let their Islamic faith be tarnished by extremists acting in its name, and have informed law enforcement about plots or suspicious individuals they encounter.

It requires an immigration system based on common sense – which says if we can’t fully vet someone and verify that they don’t have terrorist ties, then we simply can’t allow them inside our country or make them citizens.

It requires working with our partners to target this hateful ideology at its roots, dismantle its organizations, and deprive them of safe havens anywhere in the world.

All of these things need to happen to stop the worst threats from striking us here at home.

Unfortunately, President Obama has proven himself unable to meet these challenges for the past eight years.

The world is now a more dangerous place than when he came into office. Because instead of seeing the chaos and threats that all of us see, he dismisses the enemy and underestimates the challenges they pose to our very way of life.

And yet, the worst of his presidency may still be yet to come.

With just four months left in office, President Obama and his allies in Congress want to release every single terrorist from the military’s custody at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

We’ve already seen why this is a dangerous mistake, as many have been released to other countries, only to quickly go missing. Others have returned to the battlefield, and replenished the forces of evil.

The terrorists still behind bars are the worst of the worst, but President Obama and his misguided allies in Congress still want to send them to other countries, or even bring these terrorists here to U.S. soil.

If Congress and the American people don’t stop this terrible plan, these terrorists could join the ranks of al Qaeda or ISIS, at the same time our troops are trying to defeat them.

Thanks to a Republican Congress, we have successfully blocked President Obama from bringing terrorist detainees to U.S. soil. And I’ve introduced legislation to prevent the White House from evading restrictions in current law and allowing them to release all the terrorists from Guantanamo anyway.

But the president and his allies remain committed to getting this done – even though it helps these groups grow even stronger, and even though it increases the risks to Americans at home and abroad.

Even while other policies – like the disastrous deal with Iran – are providing the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism with billions of dollars in sanctions relief and ransom payments, money they will use to fulfill their dreams of ‘death to America’ and wiping Israel off the planet. Most of the Democrats in Congress supported this flawed deal too, and they continue doing everything they can to salvage it.

All these challenges underscore the need to rebuild our military, to reassure our traditional allies, and reassert American leadership on the world stage. Unless we take these actions, we will be unable to leave the world more secure for future generations of Americans.

The next four months could be President Obama’s most damaging yet as he works to fulfill these last ditch legacy projects. But it’s up to the American people and those of us in Congress to stop him.

Pakistan: Where Nukes and Terrorists Are Exported!

Against the backdrop of a possible Indian intervention in Balochistan, Gen Raheel Sharif sent a clear message of threat to a number of audiences, saying “We are aware of our enemies, know their tactics and to spoil their designs we would go beyond even the last limit”, hinting the use of nuke against “enemies”.

But Before this, recently, Pak-based Jihadi terrorist, Hafiz Saeed, the chief of  Jamaat-ud-Dawah, directly conveyed Pakistan’s message to India and US in which he threatened both countries of dire consequences “if it continued to show aggression against Pakistan and let US aircraft to use its airbase, Islamabad would not hesitate to use nuclear bombs if New Delhi attacks”.

With the bogy of nuclear threat and Jihadi proxy wars Pakistani state hardly left a stone unturned in its nefarious designs to trouble India and Afghanistan, even the US and NATO members. Pakistan state has hijacked the peace and prosperity of the region with proxy wars just for the sake of Punjab interests.

But in response what is deterring India and America to take on Pakistan for a meaningful engagement against its supports to insurgents and terrorist attacks in India and Kabul is widely believed to be the paranoid of nuke threat that Pakistan possesses.

After the Modi’s historic speech at the ramparts of Red Port, in which Balochistan was mentioned, the question of Balochistan independence widely spiraled in Indian media that unnerved Punjabi establishment! And it quickly gained popular support from every section of Indian political society. Given the general public opinion in Indian social media regarding the support to Balochistan freedom movement, we can say so far so good! But Baloch intelligentsia is of the opinion that Baloch leadership must be taken on board with a holistic approach!

Now, before saying anything on Pakistani nuke threat, it is necessary to know that in fact, it is Punjab that is solely micro-managing entire Pakistani state affairs right from the Beginning through its armed forces, as Punjab is the Serbian character of the compressed chamber of so-called Pakistani federation.

The biggest question here is that: can the Punjabi Generals be stupid enough to risk its cities to be the targets of Indian nukes that Punjab rulers developed with looted natural resources of Baloch?  Now the point is that we Baloch didn’t have any enmity with India, it means our villages and hamlets cannot be the legitimate targets of Indian nukes! Thanks to Punjab-led Pakistani containment policy, Baloch didn’t build Dubai like skyscrapers in Balochistan.

However, In case sanity betrayed Punjab’s intelligentsia, India then can redefine its nuke doctrine along that line of above facts. That means India would have to train its nukes at Punjab’s major cities as prime targets in order to neutralize Pakistan nuclear threat; as it is a well-known fact that Taliban and Nukes together are Punjab’s strategic assets. Regarding the nukes, here I would like quote one of my close friends who often says that “the razor is in the hand of monkey”. It must be taken away from it before it is too late. It means the security screws must be tightened around Punjabi military establishment.

Why we insist that Pakistan is the smokescreen of Punjab? The two headed beast of Punjabi ultra-nationalism never allowed this unformatted country to become a genuine federal state. Punjabis apparently never formed a nationalist party in the name of Punjab interest; yet reclusively, they’re extremely ultra-nationalists regarding their hold over Pakistani state affairs and that ultra-nationalism is shrouded in the garb of Pakistani nation! They don’t trust other nationalities except themselves. Yet the Islam is the shield they use to draw legitimacy for the smokescreen of Punjab, called Pakistan. The same Islam is also used on the peripheries of Pakistan’s so-called ideological and geopolitical boundaries.

What are Punjab’s interests in case Pakistan broke into pieces? It would be the biggest loser! From Sindh It loses the access to Karachi commercial port for export and import. From KPK it loses the free hydroelectricity. From Balochistan it loses the natural gas that is running through the veins of its cities like blood and other precious mineral resources, including uranium and gold, besides military geostrategic depth. In return, what other provinces get from Punjab under its dominance? The answer is: they get nothing except death and destruction!

As the world knows that it is Punjabi dominated Pakistan’s army that has been calling the shots all along in all state affairs internally and externally! But the question is that what is the composition of Pakistan army?

According to Stephen P. Cohen (“The Idea of Pakistan”, Oxford University Press), around 70% of the army officers are from Punjab, 14% from former NWFP, 9% from Sindh, 3% from Baluchistan and 1.3% from Azad Kashmir. According to Cohen the ratio of Punjabi in the senior ranks has increased to more than 80%.
Now this Punjabi dominated army is engaged in a sinister war against humanity in Balochistan with blanket impunity committing Baloch genocide thereby contravening Geneva Convention. What is more, it is now no more a traditional army; it is now a jihadist army targeting Baloch, Afghan and Indian civilians. It is the moral obligation of civilized world to defang Punjab army threats by stripping off its nuclear arsenals.

The gangs of Jihadists that Pakistan army created in Balochistan and other parts of Pakistan are getting 70 billion annually as rewards to help contain Baloch and Pashtuns under abject poverty and provide legitimacy to Pakistan’s illegal existence in Balochistan and KPK since Zia era! Punjabi generals exploit religious sentiments in the name of holy wars as Jihad and use the religious fanatics for its nefarious designs in Afghanistan and India.

Almost every region of this globe, one way or another, has been affected by Punjabi led Pakistani terrorism. Holistically, it is the responsibility of all responsible nations to stop Punjabi generals from committing war crimes in Balochistan and its Jihadi wars in India and Afghanistan.

Empathically, we want the international community to understand the fact that Pakistan is committing Baloch genocide just because Baloch want to liberate their homeland from Pakistani occupation. Current Baloch leadership is extremely aware of the politics of the bargaining chip in the regional conflicts. Baloch don’t want to be a part of that, rather, they want to be a real partner in peace and prosperity as enjoyed by other nations of the world.

The secular Baloch have a logical case to present before international community for consideration. Baloch lost their sovereignty to British-backed Pakistani aggression in 1948.  We believe, if Balochistan, as a secular and democratic nation, was helped to regain its sovereignty, would be the antithesis of the universal concept of Jihadism of Islam and would radiate secular and democratic values in the region.

A Fruitless Endeavor Against Pakistan’s Nukes (Dan 7)

In 1946 United Nations passed its first major resolutions against these weapons. It called for complete elimination of these weapons. Weapons of mass destructions has left their mark forever. The world has never been the same ever since these explosions. With utter disregard to catastrophic impacts of such weapon on humans, environment and other species, many states have invested billions of dollars in development of such weapons.  Russia (10,000-12,600 warheads), the U.S.A (9,613 warheads), France (300 warheads), China (240 warheads) and United Kingdom with 180 warheads are the declared states with nuclear weapons. The race for acquiring such weapon has drawn other states to this quagmire of destruction. India and Israel with 100 and up to 200 nuclear warheads respectively have also joined the nuclear club.

From inception and invention of nuclear bomb, it has been one of the top priorities of most colonial, totalitarian and theocratic states. Even though the cost of acquiring such weapons is huge and the likelihood of using it is almost none but these states have diverted a large proportion of their GDPs in the search for these lethal weapons and their maintenance.  Two rouge states have caused much fear throughout the world. These are the Persian colonial theocratic state of Iran and the Punjabi Muslim colonial theocratic state of Pakistan. As if possession of weapons of mass destruction defines their entire existence.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was signed in 1968. The main objectives of this treaty were to pursue a policy of nuclear disarmament and stop spread of nuclear weapons. This treaty has not prevented the proliferation of nuclear weapons. To fanatic rulers of Pakistan and Iran it has meant nothing at all. They kept exploiting the people under their domination and used their wealth in developing these weapons. The Punjabi rulers misled the world, by means of constant begging and plundering the natural resources of nations under their occupations such as the Baloch nation, and acquired their weapons of mass destruction.  The Shia clergy rulers of Iran have been trying to do the same. These states are colonial theocratic states. The two defining characteristics of these states are religious fundamentalism and militarism. These states cannot last long without being violent and destructive.

Modern nuclear weapons are thousands of times more destructive and powerful than those which destroyed the two Japanese cities. The people who suffer from the adverse effects of such weapons are the marginalised and dispossessed people. One nation that has suffered immeasurably from these unwanted weapons of mass destruction is the Baloch nation.

Balochistan is situated in central Asia.  Its total area is about 560,000 square kilometres with population of over Seventeen million people. British imperial army invaded Balochistan in 1839. Subsequently, it divided Balochistan in three parts. Currently, the western Balochistan is under illegal occupation of Persian theocratic rulers of Iran. The eastern part of Balochistan regained its independence from Britain on 11 August 1947, the news of which was reported in the New York Times on 12 August 1947. The newly forged British colonial construction, the state of Pakistan (the land of cleans!), ordered its army to invade eastern Balochistan on 27 March 1948 and annexed Balochistan by force to its territory. Punjabi army, clergy and commercial rulers of Pakistan since illegal occupation of eastern Balochistan have carried out five major military operations, which were in 1948, 1958, 1962, 1973-77 and 2002 that is still in its full swing. Thousands of Baloch political and human rights and civilian have been abducted and disappeared, killed and displaced in the course of these military offences.

In addition, Panjabi army of Pakistan conducted six nuclear tests in Balochistan on 28 May 1998. These nuclear explosions were conducted in Chaghai Mountains in Balochistan and tests were carried out in total secrecy. Baloch were kept in complete darkness during the whole process of construction and testing of these weapons. A very large territory of Balochistan has been affected by these explosions.  There have been many reports of deaths of both human and animals from strange infections and illnesses in this region since these nuclear tests. The Panjabi rulers of Pakistan have permitted no Baloch or independent scientists to study and examine the actual impact of these tests on Baloch people and their environment.

Baloch pro-freedom leader, Hyrbyair Marri (a provincial minister at the time of blasts), issued a strong worded statement as soon as the Pakistani rulers announced the explosion of their “Islamic Bomb” on Baloch soil in 1998. He strongly condemned this criminal act and described “the tests in the name of country’s defence as a death warrant for Baluchistan.” Hyrbyair Marri and his likeminded friends also drafted the Balochistan Liberation Charter and put a separate article in the Charter about these nuclear tests on Baloch soil.

Article 73 of Balochistan Liberation Charter:“Soon after regaining independence immediate action will be taken for the complete removal and eradication of all nuclear activities in Balochistan. Nuclear tests were conducted, against the wishes and without the consent of Baloch people, in Balochistan. They were carried out by Pakistan in the Raaskoh Mountian in Chaagi district of Balochistan on 28th May 1998. An independent investigation, by the United Nations, on the impact of these tests on the people and environment in these regions in Balochistan will be requested. The areas that have been contaminated by radio toxicity will be cleaned and there will be independent scientific research carried out to establish the damage caused on the environment and the effects of radiation on the people living in these regions. The State responsible for this crime against the Baloch people will be held accountable and justice will be sought through the international system of justice. Any state held to account should also be made to pay compensation to those people affected from the disaster.”

Since then the Panjabi Jihadist army has not just stopped their nuclear industry in Balochistan but they have extended their nuclear activities in Balochistan and spread the sale of their destructive booms to other rouge states. Since the blasts Mr Marri has been a leading campaigner against Pakistan’s nuclear weapons and on several occasions he expressed his fear that these weapons sooner or later will fall into the hands of anti-Western religious extremists such at Taliban and ISIS.
Like previous years the Baloch pro-freedom activists and Baloch pro-freedom leader Hyrbyair Marri have announced an international anti-nuclear campaign starting from 19 April till 28 May, 2015. The first protest of this series was held in Dusseldorf city of Germany on 19 April where pro-freedom Baloch activists have gathered carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against Pakistan’s nuclear blast in Balochistan. They demanded from the UN and other international bodies to send experts to Balochistan’s Chaighi region to examine the effects of Pakistani nuclear weapons on local population.

The second protest demonstration was held in Borås city of Sweden on 1^st May where Baloch activists distributed leaflets as part of the awareness campaign against Pakistan’s crimes against humanity in Balochistan.  There will be a protest and awareness campaign event on 12 May in Canada, and on 17 May in London. These are warm up protest to spread awareness about the main protest on 28 May, 2015. On this day 28 May, 1998 Pakistan tested its nuclear bombs in Balochistan without the consent of Baloch people.

Regional observers believe that Pakistan’s breeding ground for the religious extremist organisation and these organisations like Al-Qaeeda and ISIS have are trying to get their hands on Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. Recently the extremists groups have increased their activities in Pakistan and many small terrorist organisations have already pledged allegiance to ISIS which make it even easier for the ISIS to find new recruits in Pakistan. There are also reports that many senior officials within the Pakistan army are sympathetic to the anti-western extremist organisations.

The Baloch International campaign and simultaneous protests on 28 of May in different districts of Balochistan and abroad in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Canada and London and Glasgow are aimed at informing the world about the dangers of Pakistani’s nuclear weapons and bringing the plight of Baloch nation to the attention of world community. During the series of protests and on 28 May Baloch activists will also run an online campaign using hashtag: #NoToPakistaniNukes and #28MayBlackDay to highlight the effects of Pakistani nuclear explosions and other human rights violations in Balochistan.

This year the protesters demands will be as follows:

(A) – an immediate halt to all Pakistani nuclear activities in Balochistan
(B) – To allow independent scientists, international organisations and media to study and assess the harmful impacts of Pakistan nuclear tests in Balochistan
(C) To stop military operations and to remove completely all nuclear weapons, facilities and wastes under supervision of the UN authority from Balochistan, and
(D) – They will demand from democratic world including all human rights organisations and the United Nations to send an independent fact finding team to Balochistan to find out about the faith of state enforced disappeared persons, the kill and dump victims and the victims of mass graves which were discovered during the last two years in Balochistan.

During the holiday season, while North American media obsessed over North Korea’s alleged hacking of Sony Corporation and dressed it up as a major international incident, a far more serious confrontation between two other nuclear powers escaped their attention.While sanctions on North Korea grabbed headlines, few of us were aware of the rising tensions between India and Pakistan that could have far-reaching consequences for us in the West.

On New Year’s Eve, as people partied around the globe, a naval incident was unfolding in the Arabian Sea, some 365 kilometres off the Indian city of Porbander.

India’s defence ministry would later disclose in a statement that its coast guard ships and aircraft had intercepted a “suspect” Pakistani fishing boat after Indian intelligence tracked the vessel as it left port near Karachi.

Fishing boats that cross into the other country’s waters are regularly impounded by both India and Pakistan, but this boat was hundreds of miles into international waters when the Indians started giving chase.

Instead of stopping and allowing the Indian Coast Guard officials to board the boat, the Pakistani vessel tried to escape. This resulted in an hour-long chase that reportedly only ended when the four “fishermen” set their vessel on fire before blowing themselves up.

The Indian Coast Guard released a video of the boat exploding in a huge ball of fire.

India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar claimed the boat was carrying “suspected terrorists” who were “in touch with the Pakistan Army and the Pakistani establishment.”

After the Indian Express newspaper and the opposition Congress suggested the men on the boat were smugglers, not terrorists, Parrikar asserted:

“I can assure you that those on the boat were not smugglers. The boat was blown up and only people who are motivated and trained could commit suicide.”

For its part, Pakistan strongly rejected Indian allegations the boat was on a terror mission, calling the charges “baseless and preposterous.”

A Foreign Office spokesperson in Islamabad repeated the now familiar Pakistan refrain that, “Pakistan is opposed to terrorism in all forms and manifestation and has been the biggest victim of terrorism.”

The alleged “terror boat” journey was eerily similar to one undertaken by another group of Pakistani terrorists in their 2008 attack on Mumbai.

Seen in the context of Pakistan blaming India for the recent Taliban massacre of students at an army school in Peshawar, could the boat have been part of a reprisal terror attack gone bad?

On Feb. 21 last year, the former head of India’s Intelligence Bureau, who has now taken over as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national security adviser, uttered a sentence at a speech on India-Pakistan relations that may indicate the seriousness of the current crisis.

Ajit Kumar Doval told an audience at a lecture on the “Strategic Response to Terrorism” at an Indian university:

“You can do one (more) Mumbai; you may lose Balochistan.”

Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest province where there is a guerrilla war for independence from Islamabad.

It sits at the mouth of the Straits of Hormuz from where much of the world’s oil supplies are exported.

If Doval is right, the next war between India and Pakistan will be fought over Balochistan and may involve Islamabad authorizing the “first use” of tactical nuclear weapons.

The Porbander boat incident may very well become the Gulf of Tonkin incident that more than 50 years ago triggered the Vietnam War.
