Iran Halts Dismantling of Centrifuges After Parliamentarians Warn Rouhani Against Disobeying Khamenei

Iran has halted the dismantling of its centrifuges at two uranium enrichment plants, days after conservative lawmakers complained to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that the disassembly process was moving too quickly, Israeli daily nrg reported on Tuesday.

Last week, as part of its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran announced it had begun disassembling its inactive centrifuges at in Natanz and Fordow, but that process has apparently now been halted.

“The [dismantling] process stopped with a warning,” said Ali Shamkhani, the Secretary of Iran’s National Security Council. He did not specify what he meant by “warning,” but Alireza Zakani, the head of the Iranian parliament’s nuclear deal commission, said that the dismantling had stopped in Fordow as a result of the lawmakers’ letter to Rouhani.

A group of 20 lawmakers wrote Rouhani last week complaining that the deactivation of centrifuges contradicted the directives given earlier this month by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei regarding Iran’s implementation of the JCPOA.

Khamenei’s orders were that the nuclear deal should only be implemented after allegations regarding the Possible Military Dimensions (PMDs) of Iran’s nuclear program cease.

President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran took another hit on Tuesday, as word arrived via Reuters that the Iranians have stopped dismantling centrifuges in two of their uranium enrichment plants.

The stoppage comes “days after conservative lawmakers complained to President Hassan Rouhani that the process was too rushed.” The complaint from these 20 “hardliners” included a declaration that deactivating the centrifuges ran counter to directives from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameinei, who has some more concessions he wants the Western world to make, including giving Iran a free pass on its previous illegal nuclear activities.

The head of the Iranian parliament’s commission on the nuclear deal told state-run media this letter from the lawmakers was the reason work was halted, at least at one of the sites.

It was only last week that Iran announced it was shutting down inactive centrifuges at the Natanz and Fordow plants, in accordance with the nuclear deal.  The head of Iran’s nuclear energy program described this as “preliminary work,” and said the full dismantling process would “take some time.”
The Iranians know they can use this “hardliners vs. moderates” theater to extract more concessions from the Western world, particularly President Obama, who has already demonstrated a very high tolerance for Iranian mischief to keep the deal alive. Expect these “hardliners” to voice more concerns in the future, and for President Rouhani to wage more public battles with them.  He has recently been quoted accusing his adversaries of “misusing” Supreme Leader Khamenei’s remarks, and of cracking down on journalistic dissent, polishing his credentials as the “moderate” leader the West can do business with.

Even though it is only a piece of geopolitical performance art, it is interesting to see that Iranian lawmakers supposedly have so much more influence over the nuclear deal than the U.S. Congress does.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei today called for a referendum canvassing the Arabs and Jews that live in Israel in order to end the “Zionist state”, but said until such a vote could be held, armed resistance was necessary.Khamenei and his predecessor the Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini have called repeatedly over the years for an end to the Jewish state, including through a referendum in the region, where Palestinians are in the majority.

In his first official comments on Israel since the start of its offensive on the Gaza Strip on July 8, Khamenei reiterated the call.

“There are logical and practical means to this end, which is for people who live and belong there to pick the government of their choice through a referendum. That would be the end of a usurping fake regime,” Khamenei, who has the last word in all matters in Shi’te Muslim Iran, said in a speech to university students in Tehran.

Until then, Khamenei said, “while waiting for an end to this cold-blooded murderous regime, mighty armed resistance is the only way to deal with it.”

Khamenei made clear for the first time that he was talking about the dismantling of the state of Israel, not the death of Jews.

“Israel’s annihilation is the only real cure, but that doesn’t mean destroying Jews in this region,” he said in his speech, which was posted on his website.

Iran’s new president Hassan Rouhani is trying to improve ties with Western countries, including the United States, in a public relations war with Israel.

Israel launched its offensive to halt rocket salvoes by Hamas and its allies, which have struggled under an Israeli-Egyptian economic blockade on Gaza and been angered by a crackdown on their supporters in the nearby occupied West Bank.

As of the end of Wednesday, 687 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and 32 Israeli soldiers had died in the fighting.

Iran is to mark “International Qods Day,” an annual event falling on the last Friday of Ramadan, with nationwide organised demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians and against Israel.
