The Thane police on Tuesday arrested two men for allegedly possessing eight kilograms of uranium valued at more than Rs 24 crore. We arranged to meet outside a hotel on Ghodbunder Road in Thane on Wednesday, and nabbed them as soon as they arrived. After we inspected them, we found a blue pouch inside a handbag which contained two pieces of black uranium, a carbon paper and an envelope," said a senior officer on condition of anonymity. The uranium pieces were tested at the BARC laboratory, which in its report said that while one piece contained 87.70 per cent of uranium, the other piece had 79.50 per cent of the chemical element. A senior crime branch officer said, "The depleted uranium has been smuggled into the country. On being interrogated, the duo said the radioactive material was brought in from a foreign country.
