The strike continued in some governmental institutions by officials in Baghdad and the provinces of central and southern Iraq.
One of the strike organizers told EFE that the Iraqi government is “corrupt” and “all Iraqi people” support al-Sadr, indicating that the strike aims to force reforms.
The protest has generated differences between Shiites, especially among the followers of al-Sadr and the State of Law Coalition led by former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, who believes the strike violates the constitution.
Al-Sadr urged his followers to stage a general strike on Sunday and Monday, in addition to a two-day hunger strike starting from next Friday, to put pressure on the government to bring about reforms and combat corruption.
