North Korea has sufficient stocks of highly enriched uranium to build 20 nuclear warheads by the end of 2016, Siegfried Hecker, a nuclear scientist at Stanford University, wrote in a 12 September report published by the 38 North website of the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.
Hecker, who has visited the Yongbyon nuclear plant, said North Korea has the fissile material to build seven additional nuclear warheads each year.
He added that Pyongyang could be able to hit targets in the United Sates with a nuclear-tipped missile within a decade.
