Claim was made by Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev in an interview for the Focus e-zine
Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev has claimed that Russia has delivered nuclear weapons to the Ukrainian peninusla it annexed in March 2014.
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov’s suggested last year that it was as legitimate to deploy weapons there and President Putin said he would use nuclear weapons if Ukraine and its allies tried to take it back.
Earlier this year NATO and Ukraine voiced concern about Russian statements on the possible future stationing of nuclear weapons there.
Ukraine gave up the world’s third largest nuclear weapons stockpile between 1994 and 1996 as part of the Budapest Memorandum.
Ukraine agreed to give up the weapons in return for security guarantees from Russia, the UK, USA, China and France that the territorial integrity and political independence of Ukraine would be protected.
