New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said a power loss to several control rods occurred at the Indian Point Nuclear Facility on early Saturday evening, forcing the Unit 2 reactor to be shut down. Other details were not immediately available, but authorities said there is no public health threat as a result of the incident.
“The company reports that there was no radioactivity released to the environment,” Cuomo said in an emailed statement. “I have directed the Department of Public Service to investigate and monitor the situation and a team is currently en route to Indian Point to begin its work.”
Other details were not yet available.
Indian Point Energy Center has a generating capacity of more than 2,000 megawatts and provides enough power to light about 2 million homes, thousands of businesses and hundreds of critical transportation, health and municipal systems. The power is distributed to the Con Edison system, which serves more than 3 million customers in the five boroughs of New York City and Westchester County.
