LONDON (UPI) – Fighter planes from Iran have arrived in Iraq to provide air support in Iraq’s fight against Sunni militants who have overtaken much of the country.

After Russia supplied Su-25 jets and the United States provided helicopters, drones and missiles, three Su-25s from Iran have arrived as well, said the International Institute for Strategic Studies, based in London.

It indicates the U.S. and Iran, enemies on most geopolitical fronts, are working toward the same goal.

IISS analysts said serial numbers on the Russian-built aircraft from Iran, seen on a video produced by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, correspond with numbers known to be part of Iran’s air force.

Joseph Dempsey of the IISS noted “evidence of key positions (identifying marks) being painted over. This includes the location of Iranian roundels on the side of the air intakes along with a large proportion of the tail fin normally occupied by a full serial number, the Iranian flag and the IRGC (Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps) insignia. Imagery analysis makes this the most logical conclusion. The markings, serial numbers and camouflage all fit with what we know of the Iranian fleet.”

Dempsey suggested the planes are being flown by non-Iraqi pilots, noting Iraq has not used this type of aircraft since the first Gulf War.

A senior Iranian official says the Islamic Republic will not hesitate to assist neighboring Iraq in its battle against Takfiri terrorists “without any limitation” upon Baghdad’s request.

In a Thursday interview with China’s CCTV television network, Ali Akbar Velayati, a top aide to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, said Iran was ready to provide Iraq with any kind of help if it is asked by the “legal” government in Baghdad.

Velayati further said the Islamic Republic will not cooperate with the United States over the crisis in Iraq as Tehran and Washington pursue different objectives in helping the Iraqi nation.

While Washington is after gaining dominance over Iraq by offering help to Baghdad, Tehran is not after “bad purposes” and does not seek to interfere in the crisis-hit country’s domestic affairs, said the Iranian official.

The Iranian official said if Washington truly intends to help Iraq counter the ongoing Takfiri violence, it should first condemn terrorism as well as the parties that support and fund the terrorists.

On June 10, militants from the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group captured Mosul, the capital city of Iraq’s Nineveh Province, which was followed by the seizure of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital Baghdad.

Fierce clashes are going on between Iraqi armed forces and the ISIL militants, who have threatened to take their acts of violence to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and other cities.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said his country is involved in a “war against terrorism,” stressing that Baghdad would not allow Nineveh to remain in the hands of terrorists.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Tehran and Baqdad will increase the value of their trade transactions to $20 billion in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2014-March 21, 2015), a senior trade official announced on Sunday.

“The value of trade transactions between Iran and Iraq is due to hit USD 20 billion in the year 1393,” the official in charge of Iraq Affairs at the Iranian Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) Majid Qorbanifaraz said.

Qorbanifaraz pointed to the high volume of Iran’s exports to Iraq, and said, “Iran exported around $5.2 billion in the first 11 months of the last Iranian year (March 21, 2013-February 21, 2014) and values of the country’s export of technical and engineering services exceeded $600 million.”

Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, during the 2003 US invasion of the Muslim country.

Last month, Secretary of Iranian Association of Technical Engineering Services Exporting Companies Siyamak Dolatshahi announced that 30 Iranian firms are active in Iraq’s developmental projects.

Dolatshahi said that Iran and Iraq enjoy numerous commonalities in various fields such as religion, geography and culture which should be utilized for enhancing the level of economic cooperation.

Iran has had positive trade balance with 83 world countries during the first nine months of the last Iranian year (March 21-December 20, 2013), Iranian Customs Data said.

According to Iran’s Customs Office, the country’s most trade interactions have been made with Iraq with $4.408bln of exports and $48mln of imports from that country during the above period.

Also Iran exported $1.853bln of goods and services to Afghanistan and imported $23mln of commodities from that country in the said period of time.

“The volume of Iran’s exports to Turkmenistan reached $640mln, to Egypt $409mln and to Azerbaijan $377mln in the last 9 months while the volume of Iran’s imports from the mentioned countries amounted to $76mln, $6mln and $18mln respectively,” the Customs Office said.
