Fearing Israeli attack, Iran boosts nuke defenses, TV report claims

Iran has bolstered defenses at its nuclear facilities, introduced new radar systems, and “raised its alert” for fear of an Israeli attack, an Israeli television report said Tuesday evening.
The regime has also being carrying out a series of drills and exercises, including testing anti-aircraft missiles above its Bushehr reactor, the Channel 10 report said.
It said the regime is particularly concerned by the threat of attack in the current period between July’s finalizing of a deal with the P5+1 world powers on its nuclear program and the approval of the deal by the US Congress.
The report noted that Iranian leaders, from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on down, have issued a series of statements in recent days underlining the need for maximal alert.
“You should permanently enhance your preparedness and options for confronting different threats,” Khamenei told officials from the Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base in Tehran on Tuesday, Iran’s semi-state Fars news agency reported.
The vital defense sensitivities and concerns indicate this reality: that you should identify the vulnerable points and all possible enemy methods, and work out specific plans and ways to confront all of them,” Fars quoted Khamenei as saying.
The Channel 10 report showed footage of an anti-aircraft drill, in which the Bushehr reactor was visible in the background.
It also screened footage of the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, denouncing and threatening Israel, saying “its security will not be preserved” and asserting that the dangers posed to Israel were “growing greater by the day.”
The TV report noted that Iran unveiled two new home-made radar systems, named Nazir and Bina, on Tuesday. A Fars report said the systems could detect radar-evading targets and combat electronic warfare.
“Nazir is a long-range and high-precision radar system which is highly capable of detecting targets in low radar cross section and is resistant to radar evading and anti-radar missiles,” Fars said.
It said the two systems had been deployed “in the mountainous and plain regions in Southeastern Iran.”
