Former Iraqi Vice President Nouri Al-Maliki has threatened to expose files he has on political officials that he says proves their involvement in the murder and kidnapping of ordinary Iraqis.
Maliki made his threat during his meeting with a number of officials from the State of Law Coalition and the Dawa Party. They had met him at Baghdad Airport after his return from his six-day visit to Tehran.

In a televised statement, Maliki said that those investigating the fall of Mosul are accused of murder and kidnapping –a reference to Hakim Al-Zamili, a leader of the Iraqi Islamist national movement led by Muqtada Al-Sadr. He also noted that Zamili is using the fall of Mosul report to divert attention from his own crimes.

Zamili currently heads the committee responsible for investigating the fall of Mosul to Islamic State militants in June 2014. He was a former leader in the militant Shia group, the Mahdi Army, and is now leader of Saraya Al-Salam (the “Peace Brigades”). He has been accused of running death and kidnapping squads while he was Deputy Health Minister in Maliki’s first government from 2006 to 2010.

The Iraqi parliament presented a report to the Prosecutor General last Monday that calls for the prosecution of Maliki and 35 senior officials for neglect in the case of the fall of Mosul. Many suspect that Maliki is threatening to expose other officials in a bid to turn the spotlight away from himself.
