The NATO (North-Atlantic Treaty Organisation) has launched the biggest Airborne military exercise in Europe on August 15, 2015, called ‘Swift Response 15’ led by the US (United States) Military since the end of cold war. The US (United States) Army declared that the exercise was aimed at displaying the readiness of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) Forces and act in unity to deploy and operate to maintain a secure Europe. Almost 5,000 soldiers are participating in the exercise from 11 member countries namely Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Britain and the United States of America.

The military exercise has gained importance in the wake of tensions in Ukraine where the Government is fighting Pro-Russian separatists. The clashes between the Government forces and the separatists have claimed almost 7,000 lives. Members of the NATO (North- Atlantic Treaty Organisation) have been blaming the Russian Government of arming rebels and encouraging the separatist movement and have even levelled allegations of sending in Russian soldiers in the disputed regions, which the Russian Government denies.

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) has 28 member states which includes parts of erstwhile USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) like Romania, Poland etc. a rival of the USA during the cold war.

NATO has conducted several military exercises since the conflict began in Ukraine and has justified it officially as a preparation for ‘Aggressive movements by Russia’. The exercise is seen as another provocation, as tensions have been rising between the NATO and Russia in last one year.
