World War 3: Germany demands Russia nuclear DISARMAMENT as arms race threat grows

GERMANY’s foreign minister has ordered Moscow not to “violate” the INF disarmament treaty, after it denied an active Russian cruise missile system breaches the 1987 pact.

The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, was signed between Moscow and Washington in 1987. The treaty halted ground-to-air missile launchers from firing nuclear or conventional missiles with a range between 310 and 3,417 miles. It is the international pact that many have seen as preventing a second Cold War from taking place.

But claims the Russian missile known as Iskander can fire further than 310 miles have stoked international tensions.

Satellite images appeared to show several missile launchers and transloader vehicles in Russia, stationed close to the Ukraine border.

German foreign minister Heiko Maas told reporters he had discussed the decades-old INF disarmament pact with Moscow.

He said he had made it clear Berlin expected Moscow not to violate the binding treaty, so it can continue bringing peace in a nuclear-age.

Mr Maas said: “I have spoken to my Russian colleague about it and told him we’re banking on Russia correcting its violations of the treaty and disarming its cruise missiles so that the INF treaty still has a chance.”

On October 20 2018 US President Donald Trump announced he was withdrawing the US from the treaty.

At the time, US National Security Advisor John Bolton told Reuters he regarded the treaty as a “Cold War relic” – and urged Moscow to join strategic talks about Chiense nuclear capabilities.
