A rocket was launched from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on Monday evening, according to the Israeli army, which said it fell in an open area and caused no damage or casualties.
The Eshkol Regional Council, which borders the southern part of the Gaza Strip, confirmed that rocket sirens had not been activated.
This is the first rocket fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel since two rockets were launched in the direction of the city of Be’er Sheva on November 15.
The two rockets, claimed by Hamas, were intercepted by the Iron Dome system, and sparked restricted retaliation by Israeli forces, two days after Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad had reached a ceasefire in the last round of fighting in Gaza.
Hamas had kept a low profile during the bout, in which 34 Palestinians died, including a family of nine “mistakenly targeted” in an Israeli air strike. Islamic Jihad fired at least 450 rockets at Israeli territory in retaliation for the targeted assassination of one of their commanders, Baha Abu al-Ata.
