Putin: Technology must not be invented for sake of technology
Vladimir Putin says that ‘technology must not be invented for the sake of technology’ during a speech at the AI Journey Conference in Moscow. He says ‘Our main goal is sustainable and harmonious development, a higher life quality for citizens.’
The Russian President has highlighted several areas on concern due to the technological advancement including the growing threat of nuclear and space warfare. Mr Putin told his national security council “the world is facing serious threats and challenges”. The Russian President told officials at the Kremlin: “As we can see, the world is facing serious threats and challenges.
“There are many uncertainty factors.
“Technology is developing rapidly, including military technology, while competition and rivalry are growing stronger and morphing into new forms.”
Mr Putin insisted new threats to the world are emerging and as a result nations are “developing their offensive weapons”.
The Russian leader warned more countries are increasing its nuclear weapons programmes insisting the “’nuclear club’ is receiving new members”.
He added: “There are old, smoldering conflicts in various regions of the planet, and new ones keep appearing.
“The leading countries are actively developing their offensive weapons.

Mr Putin took direct aim at NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) and accused its projects of delving into Russian territories and militarising space.
The Russian President said: “We are also seriously concerned about the NATO infrastructure approaching our borders, as well as the attempts to militarise outer space.”
NATO is described as a “political and military alliance” and consists of 29 members including the UK, US, Germany and France.

NATO has a long-standing history with Russia and was formed in 1949 to primarily counter the threat of the Soviet Union in its aim to control Eastern Europe.
For more than two decades NATO has attempted to build a relationship with Russia.
In recent years cooperation between NATO and Russia has broken down in response to Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine in 2014 but political and military channels of communication remain open.
The UK is a founder member of NATO and Boris Johnson has re-affirmed Britain’s commitment in the Conservative election manifesto.
Mr Johnson has announced the Tories will increase funding for Britain’s armed forces and maintain its two percent GDP contribution to NATO.
