TUPPER LAKE, N.Y. - A small earthquake was reported in Essex County, New York early Tuesday morning.According to the United States Geological Survey, the magnitude 1.4 earthquake was recorded about 18 miles southeast of Tupper Lake at 6:40 a.m.
The small quake was detected by the Lamont-Doherty Cooperative Seismographic Network, but according to the USGS, no one reported feeling it.
The Adirondack region of New York is one of the most seismically active areas of the Northeastern United States thanks in part to a series of small fault lines around the area.
In April 2002, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake damaged buildings in many cities and towns, including Plattsburgh.
