Riverkeeper: Indian Point 2 may be leaking acidic coolant
BUCHANAN -
A reactor head at Indian Point 2 may be leaking an acidic coolant, according to a report by environmental group Riverkeeper.
Riverkeeper's Richard Webster says that although the reactor has been shut down at the nuclear power plant for refueling, Entergy needs to inspect the stainless steel liner to make sure it’s not corroded before it can be restarted.
He said it could lead to a major problem if is not inspected.
"You can get a release of radioactivity and a very serious nuclear accident could occur," says Webster.
A spokesman for Entergy told News 12 that Riverkeeper's claim was accurate and that they have already inspected the reactor head during their refueling process. The company also says it has spent $75 million in just one month to inspect the reactor and are already in the process of making repairs for a restart in the future.
They still plan to restart Indian Point 2 at some point next week.
