Mainstream media is billing President Barack Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran as “historic,” and in one sense it most certainly is.

On the issue of the embargo on intercontinental ballistic missile technology (ICBM) and conventional weapons to Iran, the agreement is set to remove those restrictions in five years for conventional weapons and eight years for ICBM tech.

The Washington Post reports:

On conventional weapons and ballistic missiles, negotiators split the difference between lifting current U.N. prohibitions and keeping them indefinitely in place. The new U.N. resolution will include an ongoing eight-year missile ban and continuing prohibitions on most conventional weapons sales for five years

This provision was a last minute addition to the deal at the insistence of the Iranians with the help of the Russians, who are looking for a new customer for their weapons.

When President Obama agreed to the lifting of that embargo as part of the overall deal, a deal Congress can not alter in any way, he directly contradicted the express advice of Staff General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

On July 7, one week prior to the agreement, General Dempsey was testifying before Congress about the threat posed by Iran and ISIS. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) asked about the importance of preventing Iran from further developing their ICBM program.

Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said it was important because “the ‘I’ in ICBM stands for ‘intercontinental,’ which means having the capability to fly from Iran to the United States and we don’t want that. That’s why we oppose ICBMs.”

Then General Dempsey said, “We should, under no circumstances, should we relieve pressure on Iran relative to ballistic missile capabilities and arms trafficking.”
