China to put five Type 041 Jin-class subs in Pakistan: Indian media
While the Indian Navy possesses only 13 conventionally-powered submarines, China has 51 diesel-electric and five nuclear-powered submarines. In addition, China will put five Type 041 Jin-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines into service in near future. Equipped with JL-2 submarine-launching ballistic missiles, the Jin-class are considered extremely dangerous to the national security of India.
The visit by the 039A to Karachi has attacted the attention of various Indian media outlets since Pakistan is a major regional rival. As one of China’s closest allies in the world, Pakistan is very likely to become the base from which the PLA Navy projects its power and influence in the Indian Ocean. India Today, another English-language daily based in Noida, said that the Yuan-class submarine spent an entire week at Karachi for repairs.
India will pay close attention to the activities of the Chinese submarines in the region, said Admiral Robin K Dhowan, the chief of India’s naval staff, said in an interview on May 28. During the Cold War, various NATO members cooperated with each other to monitor the movements of Soviet submarines in the Atlantic Ocean. Dhowan said that now is the time for the Indian Navy to play a similar great game against the Chinese maritime expansion.
