Mixed Messages from Babylon the Great

Pompeo Blames Iran’s Regime for Oil Attack, Calling It an ‘Act of War’
Written by Shamsi Saadati on 23 September 2019.
United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday insisted Iran’s regime was definitively to blame for attacks on Saudi oil production facilities for which Tehran-backed Houthi rebels have taken credit.
The attacks, which hit an oilfield and a production facility, “could not have come from the Houthis. It’s crazy for anyone to assert that they did,” Secretary Pompeo said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “This was an act of war. … This was a state-on-state act of war.”
Host Margaret Brennan noted that the Iranian regime’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has forcefully denied Tehran’s responsibility for the attacks, but Pompeo countered that “there’s already ample evidence” Zarif is lying.
“I don’t know why anyone listens to the Iranian foreign minister,” Secretary Pompeo added. “It’s beneath the dignity of anyone to listen to him.”
Secretary Pompeo also maintained that he and President Donald Trump are “looking for a diplomatic resolution” but added that “we’re prepared to do the things we need to do.”
“Suffice it to say we’re consistently concerned that Iran will continue to behave in a way that it has for 40 years,” Secretary Pompeo later told “Fox News Sunday.” “The whole world understands that Iran is the bad actor. They are the evil force in the region.”
Thousands of Iranian Americans will rally on Tuesday, September 24, in support of a democratic change in Iran outside the United Nations in New York as the annual session of the UN General Assembly takes place.
The supporters of the main Iranian opposition group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK) will call on the international community to adopt a policy of firmness in the face of Iran’s oppressive, theocratic and terrorist-sponsoring regime.
Prominent speakers will include for U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman.
According to the Organization of Iranian-American Communities (OIAC), the demonstrators will say that the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and its president Hassan Rouhani does not represent the Iranian people who have shouted “Death to Khamenei, Death to Rouhani” in the nationwide uprisings, demanding the overthrow of the mullahs’ regime and the establishment of democracy.
At a time when Iran’s regime is resorting to executions and torture across the country to confront growing unrest, and expanding its nuclear blackmail, terrorism and warmongering, the president of this dictatorship has no place in the United Nations for this year’s General Assembly.
The rally will call on UN member states to impose comprehensive sanctions on the regime for flagrant violations of human rights, the export of terrorism, illicit nuclear weapons and ballistic missile projects and wreaking havoc in the Middle East.
Iranian-American protestors will say Rouhani should be sanctioned alongside Khamenei and Zarif. He should also face an international tribunal for his role in crimes committed by the religious fascism ruling Iran.
The “No to Rouhani” demonstration in New York is a reflection of protests and demands for justice by the Iranian people, and the Iranian nation’s will to launch a new uprising, with MEK Resistance Units leading the way. This initiative will be focused on overthrowing the inhumane regime to establish freedom, democracy and popular sovereignty in Iran.
