The eyes of the world were on Hawaii last weekend, after an official mistakenly sent out an urgent message warning residents of impending nuclear disaster.
But a very real nuclear threat was laid out on the Line of Control between India and Pakistan.
Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rabat has threatened carry out aggressive military operations across the border, ignoring previous warnings from their neighbours.
He said: “We will call the bluff of Pakistan. If we will have to really confront the Pakistanis, and a task is given to us, we are not going to say we cannot cross the border because they have nuclear weapons.
“We will have to call their nuclear bluff.”
Battles between the two nations have gone on in the disputed territory, with 138 Pakistani troops and 28 Indian soldiers being killed last year.
Numerous wars between the two sides have been fought over the border, in Jammu and Kashmir, since Indian independence in 1947.
Pakistan’s foreign minister Khawaja Asif defiantly responded to the general’s words with a Tweet warning him of nuclear war.
He said: “Very irresponsible statement by Indian Army Chief not befitting his office. Amounts to invitation nuclear encounter.
“If that is what they desire they are welcome to rest our resolve. The general’s doubt would be swiftly removed.”
A spokesman for Pakistan’s Foreign Office also said that both nuclear superpowers were “playing chicken”.
