Why The US Should Be Worried About North Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said his country’s nuclear weapons can strike the US.  North Korea recently had its first successful test for its submarine –launched missile.

Kim Jong Un’s statement to US sounds like a threat, according to Joel Wit, former US nuclear negotiator with North Korea.  The recent military technology milestone from the North can alarm US citizens but Wit has other concerns.

Wit emphasized that the US is still not within North Korea’s striking range.  He said that it is highly unlikely that a North Korean submarine can get within range of the US coast.

The missile appears to only have a range of about 600 miles.  Wit also states that there haven’t been any sightings or news that North Korea’s nuclear weapons have been miniaturized to fit their warheads.  This further solidifies the lack of substance in Kim Jong Un’s “threat”.

The Real Threat

What concerns Wit is Kim Jong Un’s other project at hand, the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile or IBCM. According to Space, an IBCM is a ballistic missile that can travel a substantial distance around the Earth for its target.  The substantial distance it can travel is greater than 3,418 miles (5,500 km).

The nearest US state from North Korea is Alaska.  It’s 3,000 miles off from North Korea’s capital Pyongyang.  Wit’s worries for this powered and guided weapon are validated.

North Korea’s successful missile testing was celebrated and made into a “Military First” holiday.  Traditional mass dancing demonstrations, usually performed during state festivities and birthdays, were held at Kim Il-sung Square to celebrate the spontaneous “success of all successes” event.
Kim Jong Un was visibly thrilled by the missile testing’s success.  He was seen hugging people at the observation deck.  Previous comments from the country about their military technology were more for military defense.  “A heap of ashes through a Korean style pre-emptive strike,” was the warning given to Seoul and Washington in case they show any form of aggression.
